Decker agreed to sign a contract in 2009 with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records' president David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. The first self-titled release under the name Jessie James arrived in August 2009. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a number one hit in the Top 40 Singles Charts was somewhat successful. Decker always thought of herself as a country singer, but the album's marketing and production was targeted at a more pop-oriented audience. Decker struggled to get more control over the music she released after the two prior singles weren't very well-received. Decker launched her sophomore album under two different titles: Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy. Mercury shelved it after the first three singles failed to make it onto the country charts. Decker then was let out of the contract.
